"Just As I Am" - those who start their careers late in life may already have developed an expressive personality profile, even if, as with Bill Withers, it was not initially shaped by music. Withers served for many years in the U.S. Navy, worked as a milkman and installed toilets in jets for an American aircraft manufacturer, while his self-made and diligently sent demo tapes ended up in the drain at the record companies. A steep rise followed in 1971, when successful producer Booker T. Jones took him in tow and put him in the studio with top musicians like guitarist Stephen Stills, drummer Al Jackson and Donald 'Duck' Dunn as bass man.In his debut album, Withers shows his universal and mature abilities as a singer, composer and performer, which he hardly surpassed in later recordings. "Harlem," an unadorned milieu funk about the New York slums, "Grandma's Hands," the obligatory throwback to childhood, and the soulful ballad "Ain't No Sunshine" with its prayerful off-beat circling "I know, I know ..." are exposed musical annual rings of a seasoned thirty-something finally having his say.
