Her research areas are modern Arabic literature and culture, Arabic theatre, and the cultural and intellectual history of the Arab world. She is director of the research program »Figures of Thought Turning Points. Cultural Practices and Social Change in the Arab World« and member of the board of the Forum Transregionale Studien in Berlin.
