Snoeck, Sachbücher, Dana Schutz: The Gardener (Deutsch, Bruno Brunnet, Nicole Hackert, Dana Schutz, Dana Žaja, 2022)

Deutsch Der Garten des ewigen Bemühens Dana Schutz hat 2021 eine neue Serie Bilder gemalt, die bei CFA in Berlin zum Jahresende unter dem Titel »The Gardener« ausgestellt worden sind. Nach dem vergriffenen Heft »Waiting for the Barbarians« in dem das heftig angefeindete Bild »Open Casket« abgebildet war, das 2017 zu wütenden aktivistischen Protesten während der Whitney Biennale geführt hatte, zeigt die Künstlerin nun einen neuen, abgewandelten Malstil. Heute übersteigert sie die Expressivität ihrer Leinwände, indem sie einen starken schwarzen Konturstrich einsetzt. War der destruktive inhaltlich Charakter ihrer Bilder von 2016 in einer fast steril zu nennenden Form erschreckend, weil sie ihre Farbpalette angesichts thematisch desaströser Situationen sonderbar freundlich und fast schon »sonnig« anlegte, wirken die neuen Leinwände wie auch eine Reihe von Skulpturen hart und bedrohlich. Dana Žaja beschreibt das in ihrem lesenswerten Begleittext so: »In Schutz’ Bilderkosmos liegt den profansten Tätigkeiten etwas Dunkles zugrunde, auch weil jede Form von Arbeit ein trotziger Akt gegen die desolate Welt zu sein scheint. Anpassung und Widerstand gehen dabei Hand in Hand.« Englisch The Garden of Invinite Endeavor In 2021, Dana Schutz painted a series of images titled »The Gardener« that were exhibited at CFA in Berlin at the end of the year. Compared with the out-of-print booklet »Waiting for the Barbarians«, which features, among other things, the fiercely criticized painting Open Casket, which provoked angry activist protests during the Whitney Biennial in 2017, the artist now presents a new, modified style of painting. It is her use of a strong black contour line that now exaggerates the expressiveness of her canvases. Whereas her paintings from 2016 seemed startling due to the combination of shocking content and almost sterile form, while making use of a strangely friendly and almost »sunny« color palette in the face of disastrous situations, the new canvases, as well as a series of sculptures also from 2021, leave a rather harsh, forbidding impression. Dana Žaja describes this in her accompanying text, which is well worth reading: »In Schutz’s pictorial cosmos, there is something dark at the heart of the most mundane activities, in part because every form of work seems to be a defiant act against the desolate world. Adaptation and resistance tend to go hand in hand here.« Französisch Le jardin de l’effort perpétuel et Le Jardinier Dana Schutz a peint une nouvelle série de tableaux en 2021, exposée à la fin de l’année à la CFA de Berlin sous le titre « ,The Gardener ,» (« ,Le Jardinier ,»). Après le cahier aujourd’hui épuisé « ,Waiting for the Barbarians ,» (« ,En attendant les barbares ,») dans lequel figurait le tableau objet de violentes attaques « ,Open Casket ,» (« ,Cercueil ouvert ,»), qui avait donné lieu à de fortes protestations de militants en 2017 pendant la biennale du Whitney, l’artiste présente aujourd’hui un nouveau style de peinture. Elle exagère l’expressivité de ses toiles au moyen de contours faits d’un épais trait noir. Si la nature au contenu destructeur de ses tableaux de 2016 effrayait sous une forme qu’on pouvait presque qualifier de stérile du fait de la palette de couleurs curieusement joyeuse et presque « ,solaire ,» qu’elle utilisait pour des situations et des sujets funestes, les nouvelles toiles, de même qu’une série de sculptures, paraissent dures et menaçantes. Pour reprendre les mots de Dana Žaja dans le texte qui les accompagne et qui mérite d’être lu ,: « ,Dans l’univers pictural de Schutz, les activités les plus profanes reposent sur un élément sombre, du fait notamment que toute forme de travail semble constituer un acte de révolte contre notre lamentable monde. Adaptation et résistance s’y donnent la main. ,».
