That song set the album's sassy tone, with its sexually frank autobiography ("You had me ago / When I was still quite naïve") and reflections on the jet-set lifestyle. But Simon's honesty also meant that her lyricism was double-edged; now that she felt she had found true love: with "The Right Thing To Do," another Top Ten hit, she expressed her joy over her relationship with James Taylor. On the other hand, she was just as ready to acknowledge her own mistakes and regretted pointing fingers at others. But it wasn't just Simon's candor that made the album work, it was Richard Perry's simple, elegant pop/rock production that gave Simon's music a dynamic that hadn't been there before. Perry paid special attention to Simon's vocals, making them more sensitive and stirring than on Simon's other productions.
